How much does a renovation cost per room

Hi, I’m Nadine

Interior design expert, globetrotter and the creative mind behind this blog and NH.DESIGN.

I’m originally from Germany but have been living abroad for over 10 years, from Canada and the UK to Sweden.

So I ask myself the question what “home” means every day.
I have made it my mission to help as many people as possible to find their own answer to this.

Renovation costs for your kitchen

The kitchen is often the most expensive room to renovate because of the many appliances that may need to be replaced, like fridges, ovens, dishwashers and sinks. In addition, the cost of countertops, cabinets, and flooring can add up quickly.

The average cost of a kitchen renovation is between 8.000 and 20.000 Euros, depending on the size and scope of the project.

Obviously there are ways to save money, like going with less expensive alternatives for furniture or materials. But finding those alternatives and doing your research also takes time, so it’s always a balancing act between time and money. My go-to solution to create the most stunning and functional kitchens without spending a fortune is using IKEA cabinets as a base.

And believe it or not, one of the most surefire ways to save money on a costly kitchen renovation is to hire a designer to help you.

Also consider that you probably won’t renovate your kitchen all the time, so getting it right from the start is key. As a designer I can help you with that, making sure you get exactly what you need while at the same time creating a timeless base for you to do some smaller (and less expensive) changes down the road as your taste changes.

Renovation costs for your living room

The living room is a place for relaxation and socialising, so it’s also the room you and your guests will spend a lot of time in. When you’re renovating your living room, the costs can vary greatly depending on the changes you want to make. Painting, flooring, lighting and furniture all affect the price.

On average, a living room renovation costs between 2.000 and 8.000 Euros.

    Renovation costs for your bedroom

Your bedroom is a very personal space that needs a cozy, safe and relaxing atmosphere. New carpets or hardwood floors, paint, cabinets, and new lighting can make a big difference here.

An average bedroom renovation costs between 1.000 and 4.000 Euros.

    Renovation costs for your bathroom

The bathroom is another room where renovation can often become very expensive. If a complete renovation is needed here, including new tiles, plumbing, and fixtures, costs can quickly add up.

As a rule of thumb, a basic bathroom renovation costs between 5.000 and 12.000 Euros.

Now if you’re looking for a more high-end look, material costs will go up significantly. Luckily, just like with kitchens, you can find less expensive alternatives while still achieving the same look.

    Pro tip:

Don’t try to cut costs on materials or furniture for your bathroom, it’ll just get more expensive in the long run.

Renovation costs for your attic and basement

Attics and basements are often overlooked rooms, but they can be a great way to create additional living space. Renovating these rooms, however, can be expensive, as it often requires adding insulation, lighting, and heating.

On average, a renovation here costs between 15.000 and 30.000 euros.
