Hi, I’m Nadine

I’ve worked as interior designer for 10 years before starting my own interior design business.
After lots of trial and error, wasted money on so-called business coaches, and a lot of blood, sweat and tears, I now share my business knowledge and everything they don’t teach you in design school, so you don’t make the same mistakes.

Why a great website is essential for your interior design business

First things first, let’s dive into the importance of a great website for your design business, and answer the question if you even need one along the way.
There’s a lot of contradicting information out there about whether you should have a website right from the beginning, or wait until you’re a little more established and have some projects under your belt.

My thoughts on that?
It depends.

Benefits of having a website

On one hand, having a website offers your design business a platform to show off your expertise and tell potential clients why they should work with you.
Depending on what type of clients and projects you want to work with, a website gives your design business more credibility.

Another important plus for having a website for your interior design business is that you actually own the website, unlike with social media where your potential client stream is dependent on someone else’s platform and rules.

And your website can be grow depending on your business model.
Want to start selling digital products and add a shop? No problem!
Or you want to work with people virtually and attract potential clients worldwide? Add a blog and post regular articles showcasing your expertise!

But it’s not all fun and games, having a website also comes with a lot of work, and financial investments.

Downsides of having a website

One of the downsides of a website, especially in the very beginning stages of building your interior design business, is the cost, because you have to pay for a hosting service (e.g. SiteGround) and buy a domain name, and then pay to own this domain for a certain amount of time.

Another investment is time, because you need to design your website (or hire a designer) and fill it with great content to attract your ideal clients.
For that, you first need to know who your ideal client is, what they struggle with and how you can help (and why you are the perfect designer for them, not one of the million others out there).
If you haven’t worked on a lot of projects with different clients and don’t know exactly who you want to attract with your website, how do you want to design a great one?

And of course your website also needs to be optimized for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and mobile use, so lots of people find your business online and can book your services.
Learning about SEO takes time, and especially in the beginning when you need all the clients you can get, you can’t afford to test and try a lot of different things until you get it right.

10 industry-specific tips for your interior design business website

I’ve designed not only my own but dozens of other interior design websites so I’ve done my research on what elements are important.

01. Make sure your design and branding is consistent

Your website should reflect your interior design style.
If your style is minimal and modern, use fonts, images and design elements that support that.
When a potential client visits your website, they should already get a feel for your aesthetic.

02. Highlight your portfolio

Now this one seems obvious, because of course potential clients should see what you’re capable of, and what they can expect from you.
But what if you don’t have any client projects to show yet?
In that case, share concepts you’ve made for clients and projects you wish you had.

03. Optimize for mobile use

Depending on the clients you want to attract, making sure your website looks great on a smartphone or tablet is crucial (did you know that more than half of web traffic comes from mobile devices?).
So many people scroll social media on their phones, might find your Instagram and then follow the link to your website to find out more.

04. Showcase client testimonials and case studies

Testimonials build trust and credibility. Include a dedicated section for client reviews and consider adding a few highlighted quotes on your homepage, too.

05. Invest in SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ensures your website ranks well on search engines like Google, making it easier for potential clients to find you.
Use relevant keywords, optimize image alt text, and create valuable content like blog posts that answers common questions in the interior design industry.

    06. Provide easy contact options

Make it easy for potential clients to reach you.
Include a contact form, your email address, and even phone number (if you want to). Also consider adding a scheduling tool like Calendly or Google Calendar for consultations.

    07. Include clear Calls to Action (CTAs)

Guide visitors on what to do next.
Whether it’s checking out your portfolio, reading your blog, or contacting you for a consultation, make sure your CTAs are clear and strategically placed.

    08. Maintain a Blog

A blog can position you as an expert in your field, drive traffic to your site, and improve your SEO.
Share tips, trends, and behind-the-scenes looks at your projects.
But take this piece of advice from me: maintaining a blog requires a lot of time, so I wouldn’t recommend it in the first year or so of your business.

    09. Regularly update your content

Keep your website fresh and up-to-date.
Regularly update your portfolio with new projects, blog (if you have one), and testimonials to reflect your latest work and achievements.

    10. Secure your website

Ensure your website is secure with HTTPS. This not only protects your data but also builds trust with your visitors.
