The right rug size for living rooms
Living rooms are often the heart of the home and we want them to look extra inviting, cozy and beautiful. Having not only a rug that beautifully complements furniture and accessories but also pulls everything together because of its size is key. It’s like having a second type of flooring, and if you’ve read my complete colour guide you know that flooring makes up 30% of the overall colour scheme in a room. So it’s super important to choose the right rug to support the look of a space.
The rule to picking the right rug size for a living room is this:
All seating furniture should be on the rug either completely or at least with the front legs or first 3rd.

The perfect rug size for bedrooms
Most people wonder what the right rug size is in a bedroom because most of it would be covered by the bed anyways. And while that’s true, the right rug size still visually grounds the furniture, brings in a soft element and helps to tie the look together. But because of the size of a bed it’s also fine to work with 2 smaller rugs on either side of the bed, especially if the bed frame sits directly on the floor.
The rule to picking the right rug size for a bedroom is this:
The rug should extend at least 50 cm (20″) on either side of the bed, including the foot (but not the head). If you have nightstands on either side of the bed, make sure the rug extends past them. The same goes for choosing 2 smaller rugs to go on either side of the bed.

Picking the right rug size for dining spaces
Dining areas are a little bit like living rooms, every dining table has a different size or shape.
So the only real rule to remember to choose the right rug size for a dining space is very simple:
The rug should sit under all furniture, table and chairs, even when the chairs are fully pulled out. And as a little bonus tip you should also make sure there are at least 60 cm (24″) behind a fully pulled out dining chair for people to walk past.
Getting the right rug size for hallways
Every hallway is different, some are small and narrow and others are more like a foyer. Choosing the right rug size for each type is not always easy and might require a little testing. It also depends on what other furniture you have in the space.
Generally, you should choose a runner for a long, narrow hallway and a larger area rug for bigger entry ways or foyers.
