5 Tips to get your outdoor space ready for spring and summer

Hi, I’m Nadine

Interior design expert, globetrotter and the creative mind behind this blog and NH.DESIGN.

I’m originally from Germany but have been living abroad for over 10 years, from Canada and the UK to Sweden.

So I ask myself the question what “home” means every day.
I have made it my mission to help as many people as possible to find their own answer to this.

Tip 1 - Create a space for entertaining

Did you know that almost 50% of people say their home isn’t ready for entertaining, but for half of those it’s their number 1 priority for their outdoor spaces?

Hosting people is all about providing different options for them to sit, relax, talk, eat and maybe play some fun games. Seating is one of the most important things when entertaining guests so choose some cosy chairs, benches or outdoor sofas to create a lounge for everyone.

Pro Tip

You can create seating that fits your space with modular outdoor sofas.

Another great thing for entertaining people is a bar or outdoor kitchen. Of course the size depends on how much space you have in your outdoor area but even a small bar cart can be a great addition to your entertainment space. It also means your guests can serve themselves which frees up time for you to chat and mingle.

One of the ultimate dream elements for any outdoor space is a fire pit. They come in so many different sizes and styles these days that it’s really easy to find the perfect one for your outdoor space.

Tip 2 - Work with lots of lighting

The evenings are getting longer and warmer and so are the outdoor parties. That means extra lighting to create a cosy atmosphere is key. Light chains and fairy string lights are perfect for any space because you can easily drape them where you need them and once they’re up you can leave them out year round (just make sure they’re rated for outdoor use).

Pro Tip

Lighting for outdoor use should be rated between IP45 and IP65.

And to bring the fun into functional, get yourself some battery operated or solar powered outdoor lamps that you can move around whenever you want. You can even bring them to the park or beach with you.

Tip 3 - Keep it practical

Even though you want your outdoor area to look beautiful, it also needs to be functional and practical, like any other space. So always treat it like any other room in your home and carefully consider how you’re going to use the space to find the best solutions and layout.

    Add storage

Storage is the thing people describe as their number 1 problem in their homes, and outdoor spaces are no different. All the added seating comes with cushions that need storing when they’re not used, plants may not be able to stay outside year round, games, equipment…there are tons of things that need a space when not in use.

    Pro Tip

Waterproof outdoor storage is the answer! Because not everyone has the space inside the home to put away all this extra stuff.

    Create shade

As nice as it is to be outside and enjoy the warmer weather, sometimes it’s nice to be able to relax in the shade. Pergolas, umbrellas and curtains are all great ways to create both shade and privacy for your outdoor space.

Tip 4 - Bring in (or out, in this case) the green

Plants and flowers really bring out that feeling of being in nature while sitting on your balcony, patio or terrace. If you don’t have a green thumb (like me), you can use artificial plants to turn your outdoor space into an oasis.

    Tip 5 - Don’t forget about textiles

If you know me you also know that textiles are my favourite tool to transform a space.

Textiles are the perfect way to bring colour and style into your outdoor spaces without breaking the bank. And you can change your colour scheme every year without spending a ton of time and money on new furniture or other larger pieces.
